George Farquhar (Londonderry 1678 – Londra 1707) ha esordito a Londra nel 1698 con L’amore e una bottiglia (Love and a bottle), seguito due anni dopo da La coppia costante (The constant couple): si tratta di opere vivaci e farsesche, incentrate sulla figura di un nobile sventato e simpatico. Dopo alcuni anni di silenzio arrivano le opere migliori, L’ufficiale di reclutamento (The recruiting officer, 1706) e Lo stratagemma dei bellimbusti (The “beaux” stratagem, 1707): commedie briose, realistiche e sentimentali che anticipano i canoni la commedia settecentesca.
